The NCAA is an annual women's lacrosse tournament that determines the top women's lacrosse teams from division I to division III. From 2005 to 2009, Northwestern has dominated this tournament each year, taking home the championship title. The Northwestern wildcats is a division I team, who has been one of the first schools to become involved in the sport of lacrosse. In 2010, Northwestern lost in the finals to Maryland, a very competitive team. Maryland has won a total of ten championships, which is the most of any women's lacrosse program. Maryland and Northwestern are the two best division I teams across the country right now. In 2010, Maryland defeated Northwestern in the NCAA finals, 13-11. However, in 2011, the wildcats sought revenge and took their title back defeating Maryland 8-7. Although Northwestern has recently been the team to beat, Maryland's record is still number one based on their record. They have been in an NCAA championship sixteen times and of those they have won ten. In 2009, Northwestern faced UNC in the finals. They destroyed the team by 14 points. The final score was 21-7. This game was influential in the growth of Northwestern's team. This championship established the fact that Northwestern was a force to be reckon with. Being a midwestern team, where lacrosse is not as popular yet, it is rare to be very successful. The wildcats are the only team outside the Eastern Time Zone to win the national championship.
